This week, members of the Rockcastle County Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) had the opportunity to visit the Kentucky State Capitol in Frankfort. The group participated in a scheduled tour led by intern Kassidy Martin from EKU Colonels at the Capitol, who provided insights about the workings of the state legislature.
Among the members participating in the tour, Jacob Camel and Camden Larkey are currently working on a competitive STAR Event called Public Policy Advocate. Their project focuses on advocating for regulations on weed water. During their visit, Kassidy Martin was able to update the students on the progress of House Bill 775, which will help guide their advocacy efforts.
Additionally, members Kierra Larkey and Makyla Hester had the chance to share their work on advocating for the installation of a Safe Haven Box in Rockcastle County. The Safe Haven Box provides a safe and anonymous way for parents to surrender newborns in distress, and Kierra and Makyla are passionate about bringing this important resource to their community.
The group was especially grateful for the opportunity to visit the Capitol, as they were among the last groups to tour the building before it undergoes extensive renovations. The renovations are expected to take years to complete.
This visit was a memorable and educational experience for the Rockcastle County FCCLA members, furthering their commitment to community advocacy and public service.
